Brueghel and contemporaries: art as covert resistance? Bonnefanten March 2021 - July 2021

The white and black represent two ways of looking at the same art work; as a purely religious subject (white), or as hidden critical commentary on the power structures and religious reality of the Flanders (black). Peepholes zoom in on several details that can be interpreted as covert resistance. Many interpretations of the carrying of the cross are shown within and around the black area, which in itself forms a cross that is laid out over the entire exhibition area and only becomes visible towards the main space at the end. The church-like benches make this space resemble a chapel, a space to reflect.
