Whale, Locality: Maastricht
Museum of Natural History Maastricht
May 2019 - January 2020
Temporary exhibition about a prehistoric whale found in Maastricht. In collaboration with Robin van Hontem, Studio Kernland designed this exhibition to be immersive. You enter a whale-like structure as if you were Jonah. This structure shows the estimated dimensions of the found prehistoric whale, with its remains centrally displayed in seemingly floating glass boxes. Alongside this centerpiece you find its context; the anatomy, evolution and cultural history of its more contemporary relatives. To experience how a whale uses echolocation to hunt its prey there is a dark space inside the exhibition, mimicking the deep sea. You can enter the space with a headlight, that flashes in a similar way that a whale would make clicking sounds. The more clicks (or in this case flashes), the better the “visibility”. Find your prey!
